What authorities require
A certified translation makes the content of your contract readable and official in the target language. An apostille is a separate certificate, issued by a Dutch court under the Hague Apostille Convention, that confirms the authenticity of a signature, seal or stamp so the document is recognised abroad. They answer different questions: one is about language, the other about authenticity. Private contracts are signed between parties and often carry no public signature or seal to apostille, so an apostille may not apply at all. Where it does, for instance with a notarised contract or a document a foreign authority insists on, you may need both the translation and the apostille. The order and the requirement depend on the receiving authority, so check with them before you order.

When do you need a certified translation of your contract?
You need a sworn translation of a contract when a body with legal authority will only accept a translation that has formal standing. In practice that means a court (De Rechtspraak) handling a dispute, a public authority asking for the document as evidence, or a counterparty abroad whose own rules require it. A sworn translation is made by an Rbtv-registered translator and carries a signed statement and stamp, which is what gives it that standing.

Only a translator sworn before a Dutch court and entered in the Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv), kept by Bureau Wbtv, may produce a sworn translation. That translator adds a signed statement and official stamp, which is why courts and public authorities accept it. A professional translation can be made by any qualified legal translator.
A contract often needs only a professional translation. The sworn version is required when a court, a public authority or a counterparty abroad specifically asks for a translation with legal standing. For an employment contract or terms you simply want to read and understand, a professional translation is usually enough. We offer both and advise once we know who it is for.
A standard or professional translation conveys the meaning accurately but has no legal status. A sworn translation is made by an Rbtv-registered translator and carries a signed, stamped statement binding it to the source document, so courts and authorities accept it as a faithful rendering for official use.
In the Netherlands the terms describe the same thing. A certified translation is one made by a translator who has been sworn in before a Dutch court and is listed in the Rbtv register; that translator certifies the work with a signed statement and official stamp. Some other countries separate the two, but here they overlap.
