Why have a sworn translation of your Birth certificate made?
A sworn birth certificate translation is legally recognised and accepted by all Dutch and international authorities. Our RBTV-certified translators deliver your translation with the official statement, stamp and signature — ready to use straight away for your application.
What authorities require
These are two separate things, and people often confuse them. A certified translation puts your birth certificate into another language with legal validity. An apostille is a stamp that confirms the document, or the signature on it, is genuine, so a country abroad will accept it. You need an apostille when your Dutch birth certificate has to be used in another country that is party to the Hague Apostille Convention. The court (De Rechtspraak) issues the apostille in the Netherlands, and Netherlands Worldwide explains which documents qualify. For a foreign certificate used here, the apostille is usually placed in the country that issued it, before translation. So you may need the translation on its own, or the translation plus an apostille, depending on where the document is going. We can arrange the apostille alongside the translation when your situation needs it.
Practical tips from our experts
- Upload a clear scan or photo of your birth certificate and choose the language pair.
- Receive a fixed quote, then add any options you need, such as a printed copy, an apostille or faster delivery.
- An Rbtv-registered sworn translator produces the translation and binds it to a copy of your document.
- You receive the finished translation by email, with the printed version posted to you if you selected it.
When do you need a certified translation of your birth certificate?
You need one when an official body cannot read your certificate in its original language and asks for it in Dutch, English, French or German. A plain translation will not do. The body wants a sworn translation, made by an Rbtv-registered translator and bound to a copy of the document.
The IND
When your foreign birth certificate forms part of an application for a residence permit, an MVV or family reunification.
A gemeente
To register a foreign birth in the Personal Records Database (BRP) or to confirm your details when you settle here.
Authorities abroad
When you take a Dutch birth certificate to another country for a marriage, a residence application or school enrolment.
What our certified birth certificate translation includes
You receive the translation bound to a copy of your birth certificate, with the sworn translator's signed statement of accuracy and official stamp. A Dutch authority checks for exactly that. We deliver it as a PDF by default, and a printed copy by registered post is available as an option.
- The full translation by an Rbtv-registered sworn translator, with all names, dates and places rendered exactly as on the certificate.
- The translator's signed statement and official stamp, bound to a copy of your certificate.
- Our acceptance guarantee: if a Dutch authority rejects the translation on quality grounds, we correct it at no charge until it is accepted.
Certified translation versus apostille: what is the difference?
These are two separate things, and people often confuse them. A certified translation puts your birth certificate into another language with legal validity. An apostille is a stamp that confirms the document, or the signature on it, is genuine, so a country abroad will accept it.
The Netherlands
A sworn translation of your birth certificate by an Rbtv-registered translator is accepted by Dutch authorities such as the IND and municipalities.
Abroad
For use in another country the receiving authority often also requires an apostille under the Hague Apostille Convention, or legalisation for countries outside it.
What does a sworn translation of a Birth certificate cost?
A sworn translation of your birth certificate starts from €39 per page. The exact price depends on the language combination and the number of pages. Upload your document for an instant quote — including the sworn statement, official stamp and signature.
A sworn translation of your birth certificate is often required for official procedures abroad. Our RBTV-registered translators deliver translations that are legally recognised and accepted by every government authority, both in the Netherlands and internationally.
The Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (RBTV) is the official Dutch quality register. Only translators who meet strict quality requirements and are sworn in at the court may register. This guarantees that your translation meets the highest quality standards.

Frequently Asked Questions about Birth certificate Translation
Answers to the most common questions
Only a sworn translator registered in the Rbtv, the Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators kept by Bureau Wbtv, may produce a translation with legal validity. A translation you make yourself, a machine translation or one from an unregistered translator will not be accepted by the IND or a gemeente.
A standard translation conveys the wording but has no legal status. A sworn translation is made by an Rbtv-registered translator, bound to a copy of the certificate and carrying a signed, stamped statement of accuracy. When you submit a birth certificate, Dutch authorities accept only the sworn version.
From €39 for the first page for Dutch to English or French, and from €59 for other languages. Each following page is €75, though most certificates fit on one page. That price covers the translation, the sworn statement, the stamp and the acceptance guarantee. A digital copy (€9.95), registered shipping (€9.95, free from €299) and an apostille (€99) are optional.
Standard delivery is 5 to 7 working days. On a tighter timeline you can choose express (2 to 3 working days, +50%, minimum €55) or same-day (+100%, minimum €75, Dutch to English or French only, ordered before 12:00) when you place the order. You see the delivery time before you confirm.
A sworn translation made here is valid in the Netherlands. For use abroad, the receiving country often also wants an apostille on the original Dutch certificate, under the Hague Apostille Convention. The court issues that apostille, and Netherlands Worldwide explains which documents qualify. We can arrange the apostille together with the translation.
