Why have a sworn translation of your Driving licence made?
A sworn driving licence translation is legally recognised and accepted by all Dutch and international authorities. Our RBTV-certified translators deliver your translation with the official statement, stamp and signature — ready to use straight away for your application.
What authorities require
A certified translation makes the content of your driving licence readable and official in the target language. An apostille is a separate certificate, issued by a Dutch court (De Rechtspraak), that confirms the authenticity of a signature or seal so the document is recognised abroad. They are not alternatives. For use in another country you often need both, and the order in which they are applied depends on the receiving authority. A driving licence is a card rather than a signed paper certificate, so an apostille is requested for it less often than for, say, a birth certificate. When a foreign authority does ask for one, we can arrange the apostille together with the translation. If you are unsure, confirm the requirement with the authority that asked for the document before you order anything.
Practical tips from our experts
- Upload a clear scan or photo of both sides of your driving licence.
- Choose the language pair and any options, then confirm the fixed quote shown before payment.
- An Rbtv-registered sworn translator produces the translation and adds the signed statement and official stamp.
- You receive the finished translation as a PDF, and by registered post if you select shipping.
When do you need a certified translation of your driving licence?
You need a certified (sworn) translation when an official body asks for your driving licence in another language and will only accept a translation with legal standing. This comes up when you use a foreign licence abroad, when an employer or an insurer asks to see it in a language they read, or when a foreign authority handles a residence or licensing matter and wants the document translated. The translation is produced by an Rbtv-registered sworn translator, which is what gives it official value.
Inside the Netherlands it often works differently
Inside the Netherlands it often works differently. A licence from another EU or EEA country is recognised here without translation, and many foreign paper licences are read alongside an International Driving Permit. So before you order, check what the body in front of you actually requires. Where they ask only to see the original, you may not need a translation at all.
We produce the certified translation of your driving
We produce the certified translation of your driving licence. Exchanging a foreign licence for a Dutch one is a separate process handled by the RDW, not by us. If your goal is the exchange itself rather than a document an authority can read, the RDW is the body that decides whether you qualify and what you must submit.
What our certified driving licence translation includes
You receive the translation bound to a copy of your driving licence, together with the sworn translator's signed statement of accuracy and official stamp. The translation reproduces both sides of the card, including the category codes, restriction codes and validity dates, so the receiving body can match it against your original.
- The base price covers the translation, the sworn statement, the official stamp and our acceptance guarantee. Delivery and a digital copy are separate options, set out further down. Our acceptance guarantee means that if a requesting authority rejects the translation on quality grounds, we correct it free of charge until it is accepted.
Certified translation versus apostille: what is the difference?
A certified translation makes the content of your driving licence readable and official in the target language. An apostille is a separate certificate, issued by a Dutch court (De Rechtspraak), that confirms the authenticity of a signature or seal so the document is recognised abroad. They are not alternatives. For use in another country you often need both, and the order in which they are applied depends on the receiving authority.
The Netherlands
A sworn translation of your driving licence by an Rbtv-registered translator is accepted by Dutch authorities such as the IND and municipalities.
Abroad
For use in another country the receiving authority often also requires an apostille under the Hague Apostille Convention, or legalisation for countries outside it.
What does a sworn translation of a Driving licence cost?
A sworn translation of your driving licence starts from €39 per page. The exact price depends on the language combination and the number of pages. Upload your document for an instant quote — including the sworn statement, official stamp and signature.
A sworn translation of your driving licence is often required for official procedures abroad. Our RBTV-registered translators deliver translations that are legally recognised and accepted by every government authority, both in the Netherlands and internationally.
The Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (RBTV) is the official Dutch quality register. Only translators who meet strict quality requirements and are sworn in at the court may register. This guarantees that your translation meets the highest quality standards.

Frequently Asked Questions about Driving licence Translation
Answers to the most common questions
Only a translator who has taken the oath before a Dutch court and is entered in the Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv), kept by Bureau Wbtv, may produce one. That translator adds a signed statement and official stamp, which is why Dutch and foreign authorities accept the translation as valid.
From €39 for the first page for Dutch to English or French, and €59 for the first page for other languages; €75 per following page, though a licence usually fits on one page. That price covers the translation, the sworn statement, the official stamp and our acceptance guarantee. A digital copy (€9.95), registered shipping (€9.95, free from €299) and an apostille (€99 per document) are optional.
Standard delivery is 5-7 working days at no extra charge. If you need it sooner, express (2-3 working days, +50%, minimum €55) or same-day (+100%, minimum €75, Dutch to English or French only, ordered before 12:00) are available as options in the order form. There is no standard 24-hour service.
A sworn translation is valid in the Netherlands and is recognised by many authorities abroad. For some countries you also need an apostille under the Hague Apostille Convention, or legalisation for countries outside it. Confirm the requirement with the receiving authority. We can add the apostille for €99 per document when it is needed.
Translating your licence produces an official document an authority can read in another language; we do that. Exchanging a foreign licence for a Dutch one is a separate procedure run by the RDW, which decides whether you qualify. A translation does not replace the licence and does not, on its own, exchange it.
