What is a sworn Romanian translation?

A sworn Romanian translation is an official translation between Dutch and Romanian made by a translator who has been sworn in by a Dutch court and listed in the Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv). The translator binds a signed statement, an official stamp and a signature to a copy of your document, which is what lets Dutch authorities such as the IND, your municipality, the courts and universities treat it as the official version.

What is the difference between a certified and a sworn translation?

In the Netherlands the two terms describe the same thing. A certified translation here means a sworn translation: one produced by a court-sworn, Rbtv-registered translator who attaches a signed statement and an official stamp. In some other countries a certified translation can be a simple signed declaration without that legal standing, so when a Dutch authority asks for a certified translation it means the sworn version.

If you are sending a document abroad, check with the receiving authority whether they need the sworn translation legalised with an apostille as well.

How much does a sworn Romanian translation cost?

A sworn Romanian translation costs from €59 for the first page, with each following page at €75. That base price covers the translation, the sworn statement, the official stamp and our acceptance guarantee. A digital copy (PDF by e-mail) is an optional add-on for €9.95, and registered shipping within the Netherlands is €9.95, free from €299. Standard delivery is 5 to 7 working days, with express available as an option.

Sworn Romanian translations — where and why they are used

Romanian is the official language of Romania and Moldova and is spoken by around 24 million people. For applicants in the Netherlands the demand is mainly about labour migration (Romania has been an EU member since 2007), family reunification and, increasingly, commercial contracts tied to Romanian IT outsourcing and logistics hubs.

Romania is part of the Hague Apostille Convention, so the standard route — Dutch original plus apostille plus sworn Romanian translation — works for every Romanian authority. The same route applies to Moldova through the convention (Moldova joined in 2007), which is useful for the cross-border family and property matters that come up between the two countries.

Romanian is a Romance language with strong Slavic and Hungarian influences, and it uses diacritics (ă, â, î, ș, ț) that have to be carried over exactly in a sworn translation. There is no separate transcription standard for names — Romanian and Dutch names are kept unchanged in both directions, provided the diacritics are correct.

Common use cases

  • Romanian municipality (Primărie) — marriage registration
  • Romanian criminal record (Cazier Judiciar) — equivalent of the VOG for a work permit
  • Romanian tax authority (ANAF) — company registration in Bucharest or Cluj-Napoca
  • Moldovan registry office — property purchase
  • Romanian university — Erasmus and diploma recognition through CNRED
