Why have a sworn translation of your Marriage certificate made?
A sworn marriage certificate translation is legally recognised and accepted by all Dutch and international authorities. Our RBTV-certified translators deliver your translation with the official statement, stamp and signature — ready to use straight away for your application.
What authorities require
A certified translation and an apostille do two different jobs, and a foreign marriage often needs both. The translation makes the content of your marriage certificate readable and official in the target language. An apostille is a separate certificate, issued in the Netherlands by a district court of De Rechtspraak, that confirms the signature or seal on the document is genuine so another country will accept it. Which one you need depends on the route your document is travelling. To register a foreign marriage at a Dutch gemeente, the foreign certificate itself usually needs an apostille from the country that issued it, and the gemeente then asks for a sworn translation into Dutch. To use a Dutch marriage certificate abroad, you reverse the order: the Dutch document is apostilled here, and a sworn translation is added into the language of the receiving country. Both countries must be parties to the Hague Apostille Convention; if one is not, legalisation through the embassy replaces the apostille. We can arrange the apostille together with the translation so you receive one complete file.
Practical tips from our experts
- Upload a clear scan or photo of your marriage certificate and pick the language pair.
- Review the fixed quote, add any options such as an apostille, and confirm.
- An Rbtv-registered sworn translator translates the document and applies the statement and stamp.
- You receive the translation as a PDF and, if you chose it, a printed copy by registered post.
When do you need a certified translation of your marriage certificate?
You need a certified (sworn) translation when an official body asks for your marriage certificate in another language and accepts only a translation with legal standing. A translation you made yourself, or one from a machine, is not enough.
In practice the request usually comes from a
In practice the request usually comes from a gemeente that wants to register a foreign marriage in the Personal Records Database (BRP), from the IND when your spouse is part of a residence or family-reunification application, or from a foreign authority that needs your Dutch marriage on record abroad. In each case the translation has to be produced by an Rbtv-registered sworn translator, and that is what gives it official validity.
What our certified marriage certificate translation includes
You receive the translation bound to a copy of your marriage certificate, with the sworn translator's signed statement of accuracy and official stamp. The statement records that the translation is complete and faithful to the document you supplied, which is the part a gemeente or the IND relies on.
- The base price covers the translation, the sworn statement, the official stamp and our acceptance guarantee. If a Dutch authority rejects a translation we produced on quality grounds, we correct it at no charge until it is accepted. Delivery and a digital copy are separate options, set out further down.
Certified translation versus apostille: the difference
A certified translation and an apostille do two different jobs, and a foreign marriage often needs both. The translation makes the content of your marriage certificate readable and official in the target language. An apostille is a separate certificate, issued in the Netherlands by a district court of De Rechtspraak, that confirms the signature or seal on the document is genuine so another country will accept it.
The Netherlands
A sworn translation of your marriage certificate by an Rbtv-registered translator is accepted by Dutch authorities such as the IND and municipalities.
Abroad
For use in another country the receiving authority often also requires an apostille under the Hague Apostille Convention, or legalisation for countries outside it.

A sworn translation of your marriage certificate is often required for official procedures abroad. Our RBTV-registered translators deliver translations that are legally recognised and accepted by every government authority, both in the Netherlands and internationally.
The Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (RBTV) is the official Dutch quality register. Only translators who meet strict quality requirements and are sworn in at the court may register. This guarantees that your translation meets the highest quality standards.

Frequently Asked Questions about Marriage certificate Translation
Answers to the most common questions
Only a translator sworn before a Dutch court and entered in the Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv), kept by Bureau Wbtv, may produce one. That translator adds a signed statement of accuracy and an official stamp, which is why a gemeente, the IND and foreign authorities accept the translation for official use.
From €39 for the first page for Dutch to or from English or French, and €59 for other languages; each following page is €75. That price covers the translation, the sworn statement, the official stamp and our acceptance guarantee. A digital copy (€9.95), registered shipping (€9.95, free from €299) and an apostille (€99 per document) are optional add-ons.
Standard delivery is 5-7 working days at no extra charge. If you need it sooner, express (2-3 working days, +50%, minimum €55) or same-day (+100%, minimum €75, Dutch to or from English or French only, ordered before 12:00) are available as options when you place the order.
A sworn translation is valid in the Netherlands. For use abroad you usually also need an apostille under the Hague Apostille Convention, or legalisation through the embassy for countries outside it. The receiving country sets the requirement; we can add the apostille for €99 per document and tell you which route fits.
Often yes. A sworn translation makes the certificate readable and official in another language; an apostille confirms the document itself is genuine. To register a foreign marriage at a gemeente, the foreign certificate usually needs an apostille from its country of issue plus a sworn Dutch translation. We arrange the two together when needed.
