What is a sworn English translation?

A sworn English translation is an official translation between Dutch and English made by a translator who has been sworn in by a Dutch court and listed in the Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv). The translator binds a signed statement, an official stamp and a signature to a copy of your document, which is what lets Dutch authorities such as the IND, your municipality, the courts and universities treat it as the official version.

What is the difference between a certified and a sworn translation?

In the Netherlands the two terms describe the same thing. A certified translation here means a sworn translation: one produced by a court-sworn, Rbtv-registered translator who attaches a signed statement and an official stamp. In some other countries a certified translation can be a simple signed declaration without that legal standing, so when a Dutch authority asks for a certified translation it means the sworn version.

If you are sending a document abroad, check with the receiving authority whether they need the sworn translation legalised with an apostille as well.

How much does a sworn English translation cost?

A sworn English translation costs from €39 for the first page, with each following page at €75. That base price covers the translation, the sworn statement, the official stamp and our acceptance guarantee. A digital copy (PDF by e-mail) is an optional add-on for €9.95, and registered shipping within the Netherlands is €9.95, free from €299. Standard delivery is 5 to 7 working days, with express available as an option.

Sworn English translations — where and why they are used

English is by far the most requested language pair for sworn translations from the Netherlands. The demand comes from three directions: people emigrating to or studying in English-speaking countries (the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand), companies exchanging legal and commercial documents with British and American partners, and international students whose foreign diplomas have to be assessed for a Dutch university through Nuffic.

A sworn English translator usually works in one of two registers. British English suits documents bound for the UK and Ireland, while American English fits the US, Canada and international legal bodies. Spelling and terminology differ in ways that matter to an authority — "realise" against "realize", "solicitor" against "attorney" — so the translator picks the register that the receiving body expects. We confirm that choice with you in the quote before any work starts.

For use in the United Kingdom, an apostille on the Dutch original is now required alongside the sworn translation, because British authorities no longer accept EU stamps without that treaty formality after Brexit. The UK has been part of the Hague Apostille Convention since 1965, so the apostille is issued by a Dutch district court. An apostille is €99 per document and you add it in the order form when you need it.

Common use cases

  • UK Home Office visa application — birth certificate, marriage certificate, BRP extract
  • Nuffic diploma assessment for international students in the Netherlands
  • US naturalisation (USCIS) — N-400 file
  • UK court proceedings — notarial deeds and articles of association
  • International employment contracts between a Dutch head office and a UK or US branch
