What is the difference between a standard translation and a sworn translation?
A standard translation has no legal status, so an official body can refuse it. A sworn translation is made by a translator registered in the Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv) and carries the translator's signed statement, stamp and signature, bound to your document. That is why Dutch authorities accept it as the official version.
Is a sworn translator the same as a certified translator?
In the Netherlands they mean the same thing: a translator registered in the Rbtv and sworn in by a Dutch court. "Certified" is simply the common English label. Requirements differ per country, so a translation called "certified" abroad may rest on a different legal basis than a Dutch sworn translation.

Is a Dutch sworn translation valid internationally?
A Dutch sworn translation is accepted within the Netherlands by default. For use abroad, the receiving country may require an apostille on the translation under the Hague Apostille Convention, or full legalisation for countries that are not party to it. A Dutch court issues the apostille. We can arrange this for you.
Do I need a sworn translation for the IND?
Yes. The Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) requires foreign-language documents to be translated by a sworn translator registered in the Rbtv before they can support a residence permit or naturalisation application. A sworn translation meets that requirement, which helps avoid your application being held up over the documents.
