What is a sworn Spanish translation?

A sworn Spanish translation is an official translation between Dutch and Spanish made by a translator who has been sworn in by a Dutch court and listed in the Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv). The translator binds a signed statement, an official stamp and a signature to a copy of your document, which is what lets Dutch authorities such as the IND, your municipality, the courts and universities treat it as the official version.

What is the difference between a certified and a sworn translation?

In the Netherlands the two terms describe the same thing. A certified translation here means a sworn translation: one produced by a court-sworn, Rbtv-registered translator who attaches a signed statement and an official stamp. In some other countries a certified translation can be a simple signed declaration without that legal standing, so when a Dutch authority asks for a certified translation it means the sworn version.

If you are sending a document abroad, check with the receiving authority whether they need the sworn translation legalised with an apostille as well.

How much does a sworn Spanish translation cost?

A sworn Spanish translation costs from €59 for the first page, with each following page at €75. That base price covers the translation, the sworn statement, the official stamp and our acceptance guarantee. A digital copy (PDF by e-mail) is an optional add-on for €9.95, and registered shipping within the Netherlands is €9.95, free from €299. Standard delivery is 5 to 7 working days, with express available as an option.

Sworn Spanish translations — where and why they are used

Spanish is one of the most requested outbound language pairs from the Netherlands, after English and German. The demand is broad: Spain (immigration, property purchases along the costas, international marriages), Latin America (Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Peru) and the United States, where Spanish is the de facto second language and is sometimes asked for by name in USCIS procedures.

The main regional point is the difference between Castilian Spanish (Spain) and Latin American Spanish. Legal documents in Spain need Castilian, while documents bound for Mexico or Argentina are expected in Latin American Spanish and may read as foreign if written in Castilian. Spain and every Latin American country named here except Cuba are part of the Hague Apostille Convention, so the standard route works across the region.

Spain runs its own system of sworn translators (Traductor-Intérprete Jurado, appointed by the Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores). Some Spanish authorities — particularly in Catalonia and Madrid — occasionally ask for a Spanish jurado confirmation on top of the Dutch sworn translation. If your document is going to one of those regions, it is worth confirming the requirement with the receiving body before you order.

Common use cases

  • Spanish padrón registration (municipal residence record)
  • Spanish mortgage (hipoteca) — translation of an employment and income statement
  • Mexican immigration (INM) — temporary residence application
  • Argentine university — diploma recognition through the Ministerio de Educación
  • USCIS Spanish-translation requirement (asylum and family-based petitions)
