Why have a sworn translation of your Diploma made?

A sworn diploma translation is legally recognised and accepted by all Dutch and international authorities. Our RBTV-certified translators deliver your translation with the official statement, stamp and signature — ready to use straight away for your application.

If you studied abroad and now live or work in the Netherlands, you will often be asked for a translation of your diploma that an official body will actually accept. This page explains when you need a certified (sworn) translation, how it differs from an apostille, where diploma recognition through Nuffic and DUO fits in, and what the translation costs and includes. You need a certified (sworn) translation when an official body asks for your diploma in another language and will only accept a version with legal standing. In practice the request usually comes from a Dutch university or employer, from Nuffic or DUO for a credential evaluation, or from a foreign institution where you want to study or work. The same applies in both directions. A diploma issued abroad is translated into Dutch so a body here can read and accept it, and a Dutch diploma is translated into another language for use overseas. The translation is produced by an Rbtv-registered sworn translator, which is what gives it official weight. You receive the translation bound to a copy of your diploma, together with the sworn translator's signed statement of accuracy and official stamp. The course titles, grades and awarding institution are translated carefully, and the translator keeps the original layout recognisable so the receiving body can match the two documents. The base price covers the translation, the sworn statement, the official stamp and our acceptance guarantee. The acceptance guarantee means that if a Dutch authority rejects the translation on quality grounds, we correct it at no charge until it is accepted. Delivery and a digital copy are separate options, set out below.

What authorities require

A certified translation makes the content of your diploma readable and official in the target language. An apostille is a separate certificate that confirms the signature, seal or stamp on the document is genuine, so it is recognised abroad. One is about meaning; the other is about authenticity. The two work together rather than replacing each other. For a Dutch diploma you want to use in another country, you often need both, and for a foreign diploma used here the receiving body decides whether an apostille is required. In the Netherlands the apostille is placed by the courts under the Hague Apostille Convention. Check the requirement with the authority that asked for the document before you order anything.

Practical tips from our experts

  • Upload a clear scan or photo of your diploma and choose the language pair and any options.
  • You receive a fixed quote and confirm your order, with nothing added afterwards.
  • A sworn translator produces the translation and adds the signed statement and official stamp.
  • You receive the translation digitally if you add that option, and by registered post if you choose shipping.

Frequently Asked Questions about Diploma Translation

Answers to the most common questions

Only a translator sworn before a Dutch court and entered in the Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv), kept by Bureau Wbtv, may produce one. That translator adds a signed statement and official stamp binding the translation to your diploma, which is why a university, an employer, Nuffic or DUO will accept it.

A standard translation conveys the meaning of your diploma but has no legal status. A sworn translation is produced by an Rbtv-registered translator and carries a signed, stamped statement that binds it to the source document. Only the sworn version is accepted when an official body needs to rely on your qualification.

From €39 for the first page for Dutch to English or French, and €59 for the first page for other languages; each following page is €75. That price covers the translation, the sworn statement, the official stamp and our acceptance guarantee. A digital copy (€9.95), registered shipping (€9.95, free from €299) and an apostille (€99 per document) are optional.

Standard delivery is 5 to 7 working days at no extra charge. If you need it sooner, express (2 to 3 working days, +50%, minimum €55) or same-day (+100%, minimum €75, Dutch to English or French only, ordered before 12:00) are available as options in the order form when you place your order.

A sworn translation is valid in the Netherlands. For use abroad you often also need an apostille under the Hague Apostille Convention, or consular legalisation for countries outside it. The receiving institution decides what it requires, so check with them first. We can add the apostille for €99 per document.
